Terror Squad - The Album

Terror Squad spends much of their eponymous debut trading in gangsta clichés it only seems like there's been a hundred songs called "Pass the Glock" but beneath those rehashed themes lay some clever rhymes and music. All six members are very talented and their skills are enhanced by the productions, which are not only funky but show some imagination. It would have been nice if there was a little more imagination behind the lyrics, but the record itself is a good, solid effort that's better than many of hardcore rap efforts in recent memory. Released September 21, 1999 on Atlantic Records, the album peaked at #22 on the Billboard 200 chart and #4 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums.

Tear Da Club Up Thugs - CrazyNDaLazDayz

Tear Da Club Up Thugs' debut album, Crazyndalazdayz, represents the rowdiest side of Three 6 Mafia, both in terms of beats as well as rhymes. Most of the songs have blatant references to riot-inciting violence, particularly songs such as "Get Buck, Get Wild" and "Elbow a Nigga." And when the rappers aren't trying to lyrically start fights, they're most likely spouting misogynist rants in songs such as "Slob on My Knob" and "All Dirty Hoes." So when you really sit down and think about it, this music appeals to the most primal male instincts. Furthermore, the up-tempo, hard-hitting beats only further evoke base feelings. Released November 10, 1998 on Relativity Records, the album peaked at #18 on the Billboard 200 chart and #4 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums and was certified gold by RIAA.

Suga Free - Street Gospel

Suga Free's debut album Street Gospel is a competent collection of street-level, hardcore G-funk, highlighted by DJ Quik's savvy production. Although Suga Free is a strong rapper, he isn't particularly distinctive, and he's often given pedestrian backing music, which makes the album a little tedious. Still, he's charismatic enough to make the best songs, like the single "If You Stay Ready," powerful and that makes the album worthwhile. Released May 20, 1997 on Laid Black/Black Island/Polygram Records, the album peaked at #37 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums.

Styles Of Beyond - 2000 Fold

Styles of Beyond keep one foot firmly planted in the hip-hop underground, while the other one jets forward into wholly uncharted territory on their debut album 2000 Fold. Despite their sometimes bizarre lyrical flights of fancy, they still maintain the menacing delivery of most hardcore and street MCs, but that does not render the message at odds with the medium. Instead, it fits the idea of the increasingly burdensome millennium that is a primary theme on the album, and the duo's inventiveness does, indeed, move the music forward, challenging hip-hop convention with experimental and wide-ranging lyrical ideas and themes. Released August 18, 1997 on Bilawn/SpyTech/Mammoth/Ideal Records.

Sporty Thievz - Street Cinema

The very name Sporty Thievz leaves little doubt that the Yonkers trio are straight-up, stylish gangstas. And, since this is New York, that means an emphasis on lyrical gymnastics and hard-hitting beats. And their debut Street Cinema, contain some irresistible beats and grooves, designed to keep the party jumping. And it would keep the party jumping, if Street Cinema wasn't conceived as an audio movie, necessitating the appearence of sketches and dialogue between songs. Telling a story with an album ain't that easy. Released December 23, 1998 on Ruffhouse Records, the album peaked at #66 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums.

Special Ed - Youngest In Charge

At the tender age of 16, Brooklynite Special Ed burst on the scene with enough talent to stake his claim among hip-hop's big boys. For Special Ed, MC stands for master of cleverness, and Youngest in Charge is replete with it. The gifted manchild boasts a versatile repertoire, using various lyrical styles and rhymes spiked with punchlines and metaphors that indicate wisdom beyond his 16 years. Smif N Wessun - Dah Shinin'

Upon its release in 1995, Smif-n-Wessun's Dah Shinin' was unfortunately swept aside by the popular onslaught of The Notorious B.I.G. and the Wu Tang Clan. That's too bad, because the group's album is a masterpiece of New York City crime rap. Tek and Steele don't break any new ground, but they bring enough joyful abandon to their tales of guns, drugs, and thugs to keep things interesting. Their smoked-out rhymes match the beats perfectly. Indeed, few hip-hop albums offer such a unified coherent effort. Dah Shinin' is certainly Smif-n-Wessun's strongest album to date, and it represents Da Beatminerz's high point as well. Released January 10, 1995 on Wreck Records, the album peaked at #59 on the Billboard 200 chart and #5 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums.

Skee Lo - I Wish

"I Wish" was an irresistible piece of pop-rap, featuring a slinky, funky beat and a sunny hook that rang in your head for days. It's undeniably the highlight of Skee Lo's debut album, but he has enough charm and self-deprecating wit to make the rest of the record enjoyable, even if none of the songs have beats, lyrics or hooks quite as intoxicating as the title track. Released June 27, 1995 on Zomba Records, the album peaked at #53 on the Billboard 200 chart and #37 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums and was certified gold by RIAA.

Screwball - Y2K: The Album

This inner city quartet first gained notoriety when they released the somewhat disturbing single "Who Shot Rudy?" (concerning the fictional shooting of New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani). Scarface - Mr. Scarface Is Back

Fresh from the success of "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," his breakthrough hit with Geto Boys, Scarface continued his streak of excellence with his exceptionally creative solo debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back. One of the first gangsta rap albums to offer as much imagination as it does exploitation. Released October 3, 1991 on Rap A Lot Records, the album peaked at #51 on the Billboard 200 chart and #13 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums and was certified gold by RIAA.
